Aluminum sand casting converting to high pressure die casting
Aluminum sand casting is a much traditional casting process, compared with high pressure die casting. Aluminum sand casting process is not limited by the size of the casting parts. Some aluminum casting foundries can cast extreme large and heavy parts up to 500kg.Compared with the cost of a die casting mold, the aluminum pattern is much cheaper, thus aluminum sand casting is much economical to cast a small volume of goods say several hundred pieces or even below one hundred pieces .Besides, the lead time of an aluminum pattern is much shorter than that of a die casting mold, aluminum sand castings are always applied in sample testing period. It is economical and fast.

We are sourcing aluminum sand cast products from them as prototype for die casting project, or regular raw sand castings of succeeding machining by ourselves.
Aluminum sand casting technique database
Surface treatment: aluminum sand cast parts can only be black hard anodized as high pressure die cast parts, and it is rarely polished for surface decoration purpose. Besides it can be suited to other surface treatment like powder coating, electroplating, painting and electrophoresis etc.
Heat treatment: aluminum sand cast parts can be processed by heat treatment to reinforce its inner crystal and surface hardness. While high pressure die cast parts can't be heat treated.
Feasible concaved features: aluminum gravity casting process can apply sand cores for concaved features, which is not available for high pressure die casting.
Notes of converting to die casting part
Reduction of mechanical property: Aluminum sand casting has much higher density than high pressure die casting part, for application of gravity, its inner porosity is much better than that of die casting parts. Furthermore aluminum sand casting can apply heat treatment like T5 and T6 to reinforce its inner crystal. Before we convert aluminum sand casting to die casting parts, the reduction of mechanical property should be considered carefully.
Necessary design adaptation: Those concaved features of sand casting may be partially achieved by slide block in die casting process,but generally are infeasible. When aluminum sand castings with sand core application are converted, we always have to redesign even remove such features.
Besides, high pressure die casting can have small draft angle and edge rounds, which can be adapted readily.
Deduction of machining allowance: high pressure die casting process can obtain much more precise dimensions than sand casting. While converting, we have to note that some tolerances can be achieved by die casting process directly, and some extra machining allowance can be saved.
